A born entertainer an extremely talented singer, song writer and producer. A much sought-after name in the Sri Lankan music industry. Umara has been told to be “WORLD CLASS” and “Born To Be On Stage” by many living abroad. You will never catch a fraction of a second where she is unsure, shy or hesitant on stage. Umara is a much-respected trendsetter and it is not at all surprising when the young entrants to the music industry copy her style and follow her footsteps. She is rapidly moving up the ladder of fame and many are now using superlatives to describe her performances. Umara continues to wow people with her vocal flexibility and having travelled to over 30 countries, doing what she does best and what she loves to do the most, singing her heart out.

Umara grew up hearing all genres of music, from jazz to hip hop to classic and RnB. Her parents Tony and Ayesha Sinhawansa are professional musicians. Her passion and talent for singing was evident as she started to sing ÄTLANTIC STAR when she was just over a year old! .

During her school days Umara won many singing competitions including first place at the All Island Singing Competition of Sri Lanka. Her hobby and passion took a more serious turn with her first recording at the tender age of 10 along with her sister Umaria and then her very first performance at the age of 13. From thereon Umara continued as a singer, singing western songs.

Somewhere along the way she performed the song “Snehaye” with a vision to break from her self- imposed limitations and to sing in her mother tongue. Her purpose was to contribute in her own small way to the Sri Lankan music industry.

Umara’s hard work to adopt her voice paid off tremendously as this gave a unique and very likable flavor to her songs. All her songs released so far, such as Kasthuri, Madusuwandak, and her ever famous Wassanayata have climbed high in music charts and it is no surprise she continued to do so.

Umara mesmerized the judges to 3 awards bringing fame to our motherland in International singing competitions held in Kazakhstan and China, representing Sri Lanka. In 2011 Umara and Umaria won the Bronze Award at the Crimea Music Festival held in Ukraine, competing against 25 countries, by far one of the biggest International singing competitions ever held.

Umara is the only female artist in Sri Lanka to have done an international collaboration with the legendary artist, Shankar Mahadevan also known as Shankar Ehsaan Loy. Umara was also the first female and the youngest Music Audio Engineer in Sri Lanka, until she left for Hong Kong to pursue her music career in art of Jazz Music. Umara was based in Hong Kong for 6 years, and was no surprise that she stunned and wowed the Hong Kong Jazz Music Industry, performing alongside her band “PROTEUS”.

Currently back in Sri Lanka, Umara has opened her vocal school “UMARA MUSIC STUDIO” and does music and vocal training for both children and adults and well as for special needs and autistic children.

She is one of the most demanded judges on ‘Youth With Talent’, a Reality TV Competition based on pure talent and not based on singing only. Umara also led and mentored the Airforce Team on Ranaviru Real Star, a Reality TV Singing Competition for the Tri Forces in Sri Lanka in 2016.
